Remove the pr otection cap from the digital thermometer .
Make sure that the metal probe of the exible tip is still rmly
attached to the digital thermometer
Lubricate the tip of the digital thermometer with a water -
Do not use petroleum jelly (e.g. vaseline).
Press I to switch on the digital thermometer .
La y the baby on its stomach or its side.
With one hand, separate the baby’ s buttocks. With the
gently slide the tip of the digital thermometer
no more than 12mm (1/2 inch) into the r
ectum. If you
detect any r
esistance, stop immediately .
Hold the baby rmly so that it cannot turn while the digital
thermometer is inser
Never push the exible tip too far into the r
K eep the digital thermometer in place until the
measurement is nished (when the °C indication stops
ashing and the thermometer beeps).
‘Audible signals’ at the end of this chapter for the
meaning of the beeps.
If for some reason the temper ature cannot be measured, the
‘Lo’ or ‘Hi’. This means that the temperature is outside
the temperature r
ange. Switc h off the digital thermometer, c heck if it
is correctly positioned and switch it on again.
Remove the digital thermometer and r ead the display .
Press I to switch off the digital thermometer .
